Ubu in Newport, 1975

After I completed my MA at the Courtauld, I got a job teaching Art History at Newport College of Art. There, I soon became friends with a colleague, Graham Passmore, who was planning a student production of Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi. I helped out, in particular by designing the publicity material. I still like this crayon drawing I did for the poster; it stands up well against other Ubus I have seen since. And the programme notes sum up some of the reasons why the play remains so fascinating.
