Thomas Struth: Clinton Road
This extended essay on Thomas Struth’s photograph ‘Clinton Road, London, 1977’ was published in the journal Photographies, 10:1 (January 2017).
It was developed from a talk given at Birkbeck College in 2015; my thanks to Patrizia di Bello for inviting me to give that talk and David Bate for asking me to develop it for Photographies.
The first part of this 11,000 word text is a close examination of the photograph itself, the second part applies a number of theoretical positions to a reading of the image and the third part looks at the history of the street, culminating in a visit to the place itself.
