A Royal Wedding in Newport (1981)
This sequence recorded the evidence of an event of national importance in a single, typical British town over two months, leading up to July 29, 1981.
It was first shown the following year in the local Art Gallery, as a large mosaic of colour snapshots. A selection was also exhibited in the Ffotogallery, Cardiff.
In 2018, at the time of another royal wedding of a rather different kind, a book version was published in the extensive series of documentary studies published by Café Royal books. It was a delightful place for this work to be located and I thank Craig Atkinson for facilitating that.
The Café Royal book is now sold out at the publishers. However, I do myself still have a few copies left and these can be purchased (signed or unsigned), through this website. See ‘Contact’ for details.
The slideshow here is a different edit of the work. It is accompanied by an advert for the original exhibition in the South Wales Argus.
The other slideshow is its companion sequence A Royal Funeral in Newport, made in the shopping centre of the same town on the morning of September 6, 1997.
