A Memoir of Man Ray
The visit recorded here took place on February 28, 1974, and I went to see Man Ray and his wife Juliet with Laurie McFadden. We simply walked over to 2bis, Rue Ferou, and knocked on the door. Juliet answered and asked us to come back later, which we did.
This memoir of our visit first appeared in my MA Report, ‘Man Ray as a Photographer’, Courtauld Institute, 1974. When Man Ray died two years later, it was reprinted as reproduced here in Creative Camera, 151 (January 1977).
I later learned that the photograph of Man Ray and Duchamp together on the sofa had been taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson.
