Cleveland Catalogue Essay

 

In 2007, the Cleveland Museum of Art acquired the David Raymond collection, some 187 vintage prints of surrealist and modernist photographs. These were exhibited at the Museum in 2014 under the title Forbidden Games.

I was invited to contribute an essay to the substantial book which was published alongside the exhibition. The title of my text was ‘The Latest Snapshot: Surrealist Photography Seen through the Raymond Collection’, and in it I connected general comments on surrealist photography as an area of enquiry with examinations of specific images in the Raymond Collection. Some of these were well-known, others obscure but intriguing.
